Hey, welcome to Othertongue. I’m Lindsay Maitland Hunt, a writer and editor mostly known for my 13-plus years in the food media industry. I’ve published two cookbooks, Healthyish and Help Yourself. The latter was a deep dive into how the gut microbiota works, with over 100 recipes for putting the science into action. While researching and reporting Help Yourself, I realized that my passion was in other areas of writing beyond food: specifically, analytical, research-based essays about culture, linguistics, and philosophy and books. Lots and LOTS of books.

What is Othertongue?

My broad areas of interest include language and linguistics, philosophy, and cultural studies. Basically, I want to explore questions about how modern life is right now using these academic disciplines. Right now I’m following two threads of interest: the philosophy of aesthetics and sociolinguistics, particularly as language relates to the rise in nationalism and neocolonialism.

Othertongue will include dispatches from my research, reviews of books, and essays about modern life. My goal for the newsletter is an investigation-in-progress, and I invite you to join me as I read, research, learn, draw connections, and attempt to make sense of modern life using cultural studies, linguistics, and philosophy, among other disciplines.
